I would like to use XMP,so maybe I'll use only 8GB of RAM instead of 12GB for stability purposes. Turns out I have a bad dimm slot and I'm not sure if I want to go threw the hassle of getting a replacement. The deciding factor will be if having the ram in 1 and 3 will make any sort of difference because when I boot my computer I get a message saying my memory is in unoptimized positions. As in the thread title, if i was too install 2 x 2gb sticks in the 2 and 4 slots on my motherboard would the results be the same as if i used 1 and 3. Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DQ6. Memory slots 1 and 3 are Yellow and 2 and 4 are red. In the manual it says it can handle dual channel in both sets.

DDR RAM stands for "Double Data Rate Random Access Memory.
The original DDR RAM was, very simply, exactly like the old SD RAM but with the speed at which it could ram slots 1 and 3 data doubled by transferring on both clock edges.
DDR2 RAM added a 2x clock multiplier to the module, which meant the bus clock running at the same speed as DDR RAM would be doubled, thus multiplying transfer speeds by 2 for the same bus speed.
DDR3 RAM replaces the 2x clock multiplier with a 4x clock multiplier, thus running at 4 times the memory transfer rate for the same bus speed as the original DDR RAM.
Additionally, DDR2 is capable of running at a lower voltage than DDR, and DDR3 is again capable of running at a lower voltage than DDR2.
Update: Original question only asked about 1, 2 and 3, not 4.
Finding details about DDR4 that can succinctly describe the difference isn't moon penny slots sun and particularly simple task.
There's also differences in package and command coding, but altogether DDR4 ram slots 1 and 3 aren't quite done being defined yet.

I was cleaning my pc today and saw on my motherboard it said DDR3_4 and DDR3_2. My ram was on slot 1 and 3 for 3 years. Also during week I noticed my ram was running at 1400 MHz not 1600 like it was said on the box.

If you are only going to have 2GB of ram so that your pc uses only the SAME ram, you need to put 1gb in #1 spot, and 1GB in #3 spot... Basically there are four slots for ram, but there are 2 sets of 2 slots, each set has to have the same ram, in the same slot, does that make sense? If the 1GB ram is faster than the 512 sticks and newer, it wont.

Thanks a lot for sharing the info. I have been receiving mixed feedback on the same. The salesperson sold me the laptop stating that the RAM can be added in the laptop, whereas the service center told me that if I need to increase the RAM to 8GB , then I need to Purchase RAM of 8GB rather than 4GB, which means double the cost of RAM.
